My name is Lukas Korpelainan and I’m running for Helsinki city council in the municipal election of spring 2025. Candidate number 741. Read about my campaign themes and other initiatives here. Ask more on social and tell me what’s important to you in this election!

Who can vote?
You can vote if:

  • You are at least 18 years of age, and
  • Residing (living) in Helsinki and are a citizen of Finland, another EU member state, Iceland or Norway, or
  • If you are a citizen of another country and you have resided continuously in Finland for at least two (2) years on the 51st day before election day

No registration is needed, you just need your ID to vote. Advance voting is recommended as it can be done at any of the polling stations in Finland or abroad between 2–8 April.

The cost of living is high in Helsinki and Petteri Orpo’s government is doing cuts to the already low social security system. The situation is unbearable to many low-income people. That’s why it’s time for Helsinki to intervene, take responsibility of supporting the livelihoods of its inhabitants and fight poverty. The high cost of housing is best addressed by building enough housing but additionally the city should support Helsinkians directly via basic income (unconditional monthly money transfer). This is possible using solutions that I explain in more detail in this blog post (only in Finnish). When the government does cuts, Helsinki can choose differently.

  • Implement a municipal (local) basic income
    • Municipal basic income is given as a gift card that can be used for groceries.
    • Proposed value of the basic income is 50 € for adults and 25 € for children (monthly).
    • The municipal basic income can be funded by raising the real estate tax and local income tax. The reform will increase the income of low-income people while the change will be someehat neutral for middle-income people.
  • Further the implementation of a local addition to housing benefits and a true local basic income.
  • Basic income experiment in Helsinki
  • Lowering the cost of living for inhabitants of Helsinki
    • Ensure enough housing is being built while protecting local nature so that the price of housing won’t start rising fast again.
    • Halve the ticket prices of HSL (Helsinki region public transportation)
  • Workspaces for artists
  • Space for art in the city
  • Culture belongs to all
  • Free city of art – Artists at risk asylum-residency in Helsinki
  • Support and livelihood of artists and culture workers
  • Protect nature and ensure ecological corridors
  • Less hectares for cars, more housing and nature
  • Network of green streets across the city
  • More living streets, pedestrian streets and bicycle streets
  • Less traffic noise and street dust
